5 Ways to Take Care of Yourself With a Newborn
Having a newborn is an amazing experience, but it’s also exhausting. Taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be complicated anytime, but especially postpartum. Here are five simple and practical ways to prioritize self-care during this busy season of life.
1. Be Selfish About Sleep
Sleep is a priority, not a luxury. Protect it whenever possible:
Sneak in a nap whenever you can, even if it’s just 20 minutes.
Share night duties with your partner or support person.
Use an eye mask or white noise to make naps more effective.
Your rest is essential to function and care for your baby.
2. Keep Snacks Within Reach
You don’t have time to cook elaborate meals, so make snacking easy:
Stock up on granola bars, fruit, nuts and other snacks that are easy to stash where you’re sitting.
Keep water bottles or a large cup nearby to stay hydrated.
Eat something every couple of hours to keep your energy up.
3. Say Yes to Help
Let people support you!
If someone offers to bring food or run an errand, say yes.
Ask a friend or family member to watch the baby so you can shower or rest.
People want to help and they would be honored if you ask them to. Don’t do it on your own!
4. Step Outside for Fresh Air
A quick breath of fresh air can be a huge mood booster:
Take the baby for a 5-minute walk around the block.
Sit on the porch with your coffee or tea for a few minutes.
Even just a little sunlight can make your day feel better.
5. Lower the Bar
You don’t need to do anything perfectly. Your only job right now is to take care of yourself and your new baby.
Skip non-essential chores and focus on what truly matters.
Remind yourself that being a good parent doesn’t mean being perfect.
Give yourself grace. This stage is hard, and you’re doing great.
Self-care doesn’t have to be fancy or time-consuming. Rest when you can, ask for help, and focus on small moments that recharge you. What’s one self-care tip you’ll try today?
